THE RICH VERSUS THE POOR 富人對窮人
A conflict between two worlds is emerging: the rich and the poor. On the rich side are about 24 nations whose 750 million citizens consume most of its manufactured goods, and enjoy history’s highest standard of living.

On the other side are about 100 underdeveloped countries with over 2 billion people barely able to subsist.

The decline of the once-mighty dollar is a fact. The $500 billion dollars in loans to under-developed countries are coming due, the U.S. national debt continues to climb, and its huge trade deficit staggers the mind. As the U.S. dollar falls, other currencies of the world will crumble. The result is worldwide depression.

CAUSES OF FAMINE 饑荒的原因
One of the causes of famine is war. The greater the war, the greater the subsequent famine. As a result of World War I and the revolutions which followed, 27 million people starved to death.

During conditions of hostilities, farmers are reluctant to plant and labor, only to see the possibility of marauding armies taking away their crops.

Uncontrolled human reproduction also leads to famine. It took all of recorded history for the world to produce its first billion inhabitants about the year 1850. Then, 80 years were needed to pass the 2 billion mark in 1930 and another 31 years to reach 3 billion in 1961.

Only 15 years were required to add the 4th billion person in 1976, with the 7th billion now reached.

Famine also comes from natural causes, such as typhoons and freakish storms, tidal waves and other natural calamities. Insects and plant diseases also diminish the world’s food supply. It has been estimated that 35% of the world’s food is being lost to insects, animals and weeds prior to harvest. An additional 10-20% is being destroyed by pests, after reaping and storage.

Famine is still with the human race. New famines may be caused by financial speculation and poor government policy. Jesus mentioned “pestilence” or epidemic as one of the major signs of the end times (Matt 24:7). When a combination of famine and poverty exists, disease is a close kin.

Advances in medicine made during the past 50 years have been phenomenal. The majority of mankind no longer fears being killed by flu, smallpox, or malaria.

However, ancient plagues do return with regularity (often with more potency) and totally unknown diseases are appearing more frequently.

There is also the possibility of “bacteriological warfare.” At a fraction of the cost of a nuclear bomb, a bacteriological bomb could wipe out the population of entire cities.
